NP-reducing BioPellets are solid pieces composed of 100% pure and degradable bio-polymer that work on the principle of immobilization. Waste products from the water, mainly nitrate and phosphate, are consumed by bacteria growing on them. The bacteria will also use up the carbon from the BioPellets, and the grow and reproduce, eventually converting all this substances into bacterial mass.

The newly produced bacterial mass is then drawn by the current, consumed by filter feeding organisms such as corals and sponges, or easily eliminated by mechanical means such as protein skimming. In addition, anaerobic layers will develop under the surface of the pellets, resulting in additional denitrification. All these proccesses have a deep effect in keeping aquarium water clean. They also prevent the growth of cyanobacteria, as the bacteria growing on the biopellets will compete with these phototrophic nuisance microbes.

The NP-reducing BioPellets are recommended to be placed in a fluidized filter or at least in a filter canister with a high flux of water, to avoid clogging and excessive anaerobial outgrowth.

On average this “solid wodka method” takes 2-4 weeks to give rise to sufficient bacteria to allow nitrate and phosphate levels to drop. The main advantage of this method over using Wodka or sugar as a carbon source is that NP-reducing BioPellets stimulate local growth of bacteria in a compartment, instead of all over in the aquarium where they may clog up pipes and hoses. Finally, NP-reducing BioPellets will save the aquarist a lot of time, as no daily addition of liquid carbon sources are required.
